Alumni Spotlight: Ilene Sperling

Lesley University Expressive Therapy Alumni Spotlight: Ilene Sperling Those of you who have been following my blog know that I have been trying in the last few months to highlight our alumni.  Unfortunately, we recently lost one of our most promising alum.  Ilene Sperling was a 2007 graduate of our Art Therapy Program , and was a visionary clinician, co-founder of the North Carolina Art Therapy Institute . Ilene worked with newly emigrated refugees from Burma in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro schools and also with students with special needs. She worked with adults looking for additional support, new perspectives and creative ways to manage stress, anxiety and depression.   In addition, Ilene offered clinical supervision in art therapy and mentored other expressive arts therapists.    In honor of Ilene, I wanted to spotlight her Institute and to encourage you to contribute to their cause . Ilene will be missed by many and we are proud to call her one of our own.

February 27-28 and March 1st 2014 Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala We are so excited to have two of our own Expressive Arts Therapy Faculty, Mitchell Kossak and Angelica Pinna Perez, presenting at the 1st Latin American Regional Symposium of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association The conference, Weaving The Americas/Tejiendo las Americas, brings together Expressive Arts Therapists from across Latin America. Their workshop entitled, Drumming up the primordial somatic unconscious, is listed with the following description: Art, in all its forms, makes manifest the unconscious embodied energies. The arts grant the soul an avenue for expression and an opening to self-awareness.  By playing with prmordial energies, expressive arts attempt to create a deeper resonance with universal truths.  Under the right conditions, the creative process will lead to new kinds of knowledge, insights, and a deepening connection with life.  This workshop will take participants t

Alumni Spotlight: Jason Cruz, ATR

Alumni spotlight Over the next several months as a run up to my sabbatical (yes, I will be on sabbatical from July 2014-July 2015), I will be spotlighting several of our alum and students.   This is a project I have wanted to do for years, but just felt daunted by all the day-to-day work.   Over my sabbatical I hope to really get at what it is that we as expressive arts therapists do, and in particular I hope to look at the integrated arts specialization and it's students, alum, and professionals.   We have the most incredible group of people dedicated to this subversive project - connect, express, engage, listen, love, make, art! This week's post is passed on by Michaela Kirby ,  who supervised Jason Cruz for many years.  Jason graduated from the Lesley University Art Therapy program in the mid 1990s and has worked at the amazing RAW Arts for over twenty years now. Check out this amazing short film about Jason and his work with youth in Lynn.  Paper Schemes Produ
