Day 46 and 47 – Faith Ringgold and "Aesthetics of care"

Day 46 and 47 – The Faith Ringgold exhibit really did not disappoint! If you want to see a virtual tour – check out Wednesday’s tour at 12pm.  You can see the exhibit from home!!  One of my favorite pieces in the show was Bessie’s Blues.  One of Ringgold’s quilts from The American Collection #5, made in 1997.  The quilt is a homage to the blue’s singer, Bessie Smith.  The quilt is both an acknowledgment of and a critique of Warhol’s repeated grids of famous women.  I particularly appreciated the curator’s notes:

Ringgold’s homage nonetheless reflects the persistent lack of recognition for the contributions of visionary Black artists like Smith to American popular culture. Operating as a corrective, the quilt, significantly, does not duplicate Warhol’s signature silkscreen technique, with all its mechanical and industrial implications.  Instead, it is realized in stenciled acrylic paint on quilted fabric.  In doing so, Ringgold imagines an aesthetic of care – a mending of history, memory, and loss – evoked by the careful attention and time required for handiwork.
